Alberto Moreno is clearly the weak link in Liverpool’s squad, but Jurgen Klopp is reportedly standing by the Spanish left-back.

According to Chris Bascombe of The Telegraph, Klopp will not sign a new left-back despite the criticism surrounding Moreno, who produced a horror show in Liverpool’s 4-3 victory at Arsenal on Sunday. Instead, the German manager will apparently wait on James Milner, whose versatility knows no bounds, to return to fitness and settle into the position.

After tripping Theo Walcott and giving Arsenal a penalty kick that was saved by Simon Mignolet, Moreno was at fault again when the English winger redeemed himself one minute later and scored from open play.

Moreno was also exposed on numerous occasions, prompting Gary Neville to say, according to Marcus Christenson of the Guardian: “You might as well start a goal down with Moreno at left-back. He’s a winger playing left-back – he doesn’t sense danger early enough.”

In one way, Moreno picked up where he left off, as the 24-year-old had a very uneven end to last season and was a train wreck in this year’s Europa League final, which saw Liverpool fall 3-1 to Sevilla.

Although Liverpool’s spending apparently already stands at roughly £70 million in the summer transfer window, the Reds have yet to acquire a full-back. The club allegedly tried to sign Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell, but Klopp pulled the plug on any potential transfer due to a £10-million fee.
