Jarryd Hayne’s Olympic dream is over.

The multi-sport superstar was informed by coach Ben Ryan late last week that he would not make the cut for Fiji’s rugby sevens squad for the upcoming Rio Games.

However, Hayne will remain in camp with the Fiji squad for the next few days, before returning home to Sydney.

The news is set to spark a frenzy among NRL clubs looking to snatch Hayne’s signature. His former club Parramatta remain the frontrunners but a number of teams are known to be interested in luring the former NFL player to play for them next year.

Hayne had posted a number of philosophical biblical verses on his Twitter account in the hours before revealing he wouldn’t be going to Rio, tipping off some of his followers that big news was brewing.

Last week, New Zealand’s Sky TV ran a lengthy interview with Hayne in which the 28-year-old spoke about the reasons behind his shock decision to switch from NFL to rugby, and why he wasn’t concerned about failing in his Olympic dream.

“I just don’t fear things. I don’t fear a challenge,” Hayne told Scotty Stevenson.

“That’s the biggest thing. I enjoy that and embrace it. I look at things and if it’s something that challenges me mentally and physically and, more importantly, spiritually, then I am all for it.

“It’s been such a God journey more than anything else.”
